Great Trim turnout at Dunboyne 4

In an era of cuts and reductions it is great to be able to report on a
positive growth story.

In 2010 just over 500 took part in the Dunboyne 4 mile
road race.

Last Sunday 1025 people registered for the 2011 renewal of this great event.
The opening of the new railway stations at Dunboyne and Pace resulted in
Irishrail becoming the main sponsor in cooperation with Athletics Ireland
and Independent Newspapers. This was a significant coup for the Dunboyne
club. It gave an already popular event a much higher media profile
particularly at national level.
This year has seen an increase in the number of Trim runners taking part in
road races. The scene was set in the underage boys race where Michael Mahon
finished eleventh and David O Neill got into the top twenty of a large and
very competitive field.

The main race over a new 4 mile circuit had 22 members of our club. A good
number of this group are completely new to road running and have made great
progress since their initial tentative runs last October. The meet and train
group which included circuit training with the usual road running has proven
to be a successful development for the club and we look to expand it this
spring. The club welcomes anyone in the area who wants to "up their game" be
it for fitness, weight loss, marathons/triathlons , stress busting or pure
fun and craic. Alongside these meet and train runners were some seasoned masters runners who have carried the club colours for years.

All at Trim AC wish Sean Murphy the best of luck in his next big race the
Milan Marathon.

The during the past week the updated results from the county 5 mile
championships confirmed that the club won the masters womens team prize and
was third in the masters mens grade These great results come in addition to
the two third place teams in the mens and womens senior grades. Congrats to
all and well done on the fine efforts.

Ultra Running Danny

Wicklow Way Ultra race is a 51km off road marathon which includes 2000
metres of climbs. The course is an out and back route from the famous Johnny
Foxes pub in Glencullen to Ballinastoe Wood near Roundwood. This years
edition of Irelands toughest ultra run was blessed with better than usual
weather conditions. The route takes in Crone Wood, Powerscourt Waterfall and
Djouce mountain. If things go well for you the stunning scenery along the
way is a bonus.

Trim athlete Danny Byrne put in a great performance last Saturday when he
finished seventh in the senior mens category in a very good time of 5h 20m.
On St Patricks Day he led the club team to 3rd place in the county road race
championships. In the immediate aftermath of last Saturdays huge effort he
was hesitant about future forays in to mountain ultras. This changed when
the overall results were released and he could see how well his ultra
running debut went aginst some of Ireland premier mountain runners.

Well done TRIM

Trim AC took third place in both the mens and womens team categories in the Meath 5 mile road championships on St Patricks Day. The Fr Murphy club organised the race over a good flat and fast course which treated the best road runners in the county to a safe traffic free route in and around Freyne, Baskinagh and Ballindrimna with a mile and a half of the Wood Lane taking the record field of 178 to the finish line in the village.
The mens team of Danny Byrne, Sean O Neill, Andrew Linsley and Declan Swords accumulated 140 points for the bronze behind the ever consistant Bohermeen and Dunshaughlin squads. Dannys uncle Benny was a member of the Dunshaughlin squad. Andrew Linsley made his competitive debut for Trim. Before the race he joked about wearing the red and white striped vest (Sunderland colours) which presents difficulties for a Newcastle native. Sean O Neill is enjoying a good spell at the moment having put in a great run in the Ballycotton a few weekends ago. The quartet was completed by Declan Swords who relished the opportunity to race on the routes where he trains.
In the womens team event the club was led home to third place by Ann Tobin. Laura Cotter who took part in some of the league races last summer and autumn continues to improve her times was the second finisher. Less than a minute behind Laura was Claire Smith who has made great progress since joining our meet and train group last October.
In the masters grades Josef Vitaser was third home in the M50 with a great time of 31.37. David Hawcroft took second in M60 with his 36.16 effort.

It was great to see such a strong representation from the club in the first race of the Meath running league. The next race in the series is the Dunboyne 4 miles on Sunday 27 March. Many of the newcomers who joined over the winter came into the club through the meet and train group. There will be many more opportunites for them to take part in the Meath series of runs and races. We have also had a few recruits via the world of triathlon. Their road running experiences should stand to them over the tri season.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY
