Noel back on form in Dunboyne

The Dunboyne AC road race attracted a field of over 1000 last Sunday. The harsh easterly wind made running conditions very difficult for eeveryone. Tim AC was well represented and our best performer on the day was Noel Hanratty who confirmed a return to form after two years recovering from back surgery. Noel completed the 4 miles in a great time of 26m00s to take runner up spot in the over 55 category. A remarkable piece of running which should set him up well for the coming season. The other Trim results were; Conor Dniel,26.12,Declan swords,26.32,Pat Comey,26.52,Mark Leaney,30.53,Mary Carr,31.51,Suzanne Halpin,35.19.

National 800m title for Trim runner

Harry Purcell (Trim AC) won the AAI U/18 national indoor 800m title at Athlone Arena in a time of 1.57.02. Earlier in the month Harry set a championship best time for the same event when winning the Leinster title. He ran in the lead group for the first 600m, before taking complete control of proceedings and takiing the race and his first national title with over 20 metres to spare over his nearest rival crossing the finish line. Last season was his first season of competitive athletics, and the versatile Castlenock College student went all the way to the schools finals and a fine national championship silver in the intermediate 800m behind Rob Tully (Star of the Sea AC & Franciscan Gormanston). Over the winter Harry worked on the endurance and stamina aspects of his running while holding down a place on the Meath minor panel. In January he finished a fine fourth place in the AAI junior 800m, an event for which he will be eligible for the next 2 years.

Ass in motion kicks off

High Street Trim was a hive of activity on Friday evening as runners, joggers and walkers made their way though the offices of race sponsors Regan McEntee and Partners Solicitors to register for the latest Trim AC night fun run. The run entitled "GET YOU ASS IN MOTION" was over a 3km town centre route. The main aims of the run were to raise funds for the Society of St Vincent de Paul in Trim and the Tabor House Recovery Centre in Navan and raise the profile of our club in the local community. It drew competitors from many local training groups, schools, gyms and athletic clubs. We even had runners from Portarlington and Longford.

The warm up got underway in Market Square as Siobhan Payne (Tri and Mhi) and Aura Leisure put the young, the old,the brave and the bold through their paces. Just after eight o clock Ray Butler,TD waved the flag to set nearly 250 contestants on their way. They set out at a variety of speeds along Market St, Emmet St  turning left past the famous Steps pub through Patrick St and then along by Trim Castle for two one mile laps.

The early pace was set by Ciaran O Dwyer from Dunshaghlin AC with Clonard man Peter Mooney and Cormac Minnock keeping him in their sights. The womens race was led from the outset by another Dunshaughlin runner, Linda Fahy.  Our own club featured prominently through the efforts of Ronan Moore, Conor Daniel, Mark Saunders and Declan Swords. The women from our meet and train group took the Gathering message on board for a battle of the clans. Anita Rogers, Majella Thompson, Heather Carty and Paula Hegarty called in family reinforcements to tackle the task. The club juveniles did themselves proud with a 1-2 in both the boys and girls races.

At finish line Peter Mooney emerged the winner of the mens race and Linda Fahy led the women home. Medals were given to finishers much to the delight of the numerous underage runners under the guidance of Dorenda McGee. The category prizewinner were presented with slate plaques depicting an early 20th century street scene of Trim by Peter Higgins, a partner at the race sponsors, Regan McEntee.

Trim AC would like to thank all the participants for their support which we hope will make a difference to our two charities; the Society of St Vincent de Paul , and the Tabor House Recovery Centre. Special thanks to race sponsors Regan McEntee & Partners for the registration facilities, medals and prizes.

Thanks to our many club members and their friends for helping marshall the start/finish areas and the race route.Mary Hawcroft got particular praise for her patience and courtesy at High St., Haggard St. junction under trying conditions. Ray Butler TD and Siobahn Payne gave the participants a rousing warmup and send off, Thumbs up to both of you. We are very grateful to Richie Walsh, from the  The Judge and Jury, Stephen Leonard, Christian Harris Scaffolding.
The cooperation of Sgt Tom Mahon from Trim Garda station and Michael Fitzsimons with his collleagues at Meath Civil Defence were invaluable in enabling the safe passage of the runners around the town.  The charities will be presented with the procceds in the coming weeks and we look forward to another similar event in the autumn.

Vertical Rush

Vertical Rush is an annual tower running fundraiser organised by Shelter - the homelessness and housing charity - and hosted by Tower 42, the City of London's second tallest skyscraper.

The fifth Vertical Rush was staged on Tuesday 5th March with over 1,000 runners climbing 902 steps and 183 metres to the top of Tower 42, collectively raising over £300,000 for Shelter in the process.

Runners assemble in a lift lobby in the tower's basement before being released individually at 5 second intervals to ascend a dog-leg stairs which winds its way up to the top floor. The stairwell is artificially ventilated with warm dry air pumped in on every landing. This is intended to reduce slip hazards on the stairwell. Unfortunately it induces coughing in participants which can last for hours!

Winner Ben Hall finished in a time of 4:51, closely followed by Suzy Walsham who clocked 5:04. Robert Tobin (below) of Trim completed the course in 8:20. Chip-timing was provided by TDL.

If doing it once wasn't enough, Paul Smith repeated the feat 9 times in succession to complete the Vertical Mile.
