Hey Ho silver

The Leinster junior (under 20) and under 23 athletics championships took place at Scanlon Park, Kilkenny on Sunday.  Shane Aston threw a new personal best of 43.76m in the javelin to earn himself a silver medal. This was a great result for the young thrower who is eligible for this age grade for two more seasons. Earlier this month he earned a place on the Leinster team for the Tailteann Games  inter provincial schools competition. Shane is the first member of the club in many years to earn Tailteann selection.  His training colleague Andrew Lynam finished third in both the junior hammer and the shot putt.

PBs galore

The Bob Heffernan Memorial  5km organised by Na Fianna AC  is one of the best road races in Ireland. The race attracts some of the best  road racers in the country every year. The race took place over a fast flattish cours near Johnstownbridge and many runners  were very happy to post good times and personal best performances. This year Kildalkey native Andrew Ledwith took part and gave an exhibition in quality distance running to the spectators along the route and and a clean pair of heels to the opposition. A fortnight ago Andrew the currant national half marathon champion finished a brilliant seventh in the Manchester 10km which was won by  the legendary Haile Gabresalassie.
PBs were achieved by, Conor, Maureen, Declan, Enda, Don, Laura and Barry.
The Trim results were as follows -Don Mahon 17m 25sec John Ferry 17m 53sec Declan Swords 18m 25sec Enda Markey 18m 44sec John Canning 19m 44sec Conor Daniel 19m 52sec Maureen Lowther 20m 08sec Martin Brogan 20m 22sec Barry Harten 20m 41sec  John Rowe 20m 49sec Ciaran Tobin 20m 53sec Laura Cotter 21m 33sec Brian Cully 21m 34sec Sheila Quinn 24m 22sec John Leonard 23m 07sec Jane Murphy 25m 03sec

Champions League

The final round of the 2011 Mullingar Harriers league took place over a five kilometre course in the grounds of Belvedere House last  Wednesday evening. The weather conditions were more akin to mid winter than mid summer but they did not deter over 500 runners from throughout the midlands from  fishing out the four race series. The final race was also a test for the runners powers of recovery as it was 24 hours after the fast and flat Na Fianna 5km in Johnstownbridge, which was bound to cause some fatigue. Prizes were awarded on the basis of the best aggregate time/placing in 3 out of 4 runs. In the W50 class Marian Buckley went one better than last season by taking the top prize in her age group. In the M55 grade new club member Sean Sheehy continued his progress from the early season with third place in his age group.

Overall the four race series attracted great turnouts form our club this year. Many of the new members who joined our meet and train group last autumn made great progress with their race times over the course of the four race series. The fact that the same route was used each week challenged all participants to give it their best to improve. The Trim results from round 4 were Andrew Linsley,17.59;Enda Markey,18.38;Declan Swords,19.06;John Doyle,19.07;John Canning,20.09;Sean Sheehy,20.20;Martin Brogan,20.86;Paul Smith,21.45;Laura Cotter,22.00;Claire Smith,22.13;Ciaran Tobin,22.15;Brian Cully,22.21;Marian Buckley,24.01;Trish Duffy,24.21;Carrie Brogan,24.26;Robert Tobin,24.40;Heather Carty,25.448;Paula Hegarty,25.54;Mary Carr,26.48;Justina Rigney,27.08;Maria Brogan,27.37;Valerie Malone,28.07.
