Vertical Rush is an annual tower running fundraiser organised by Shelter - the homelessness and housing charity - and hosted by Tower 42, the City of London's second tallest skyscraper.
The fifth Vertical Rush was staged on Tuesday 5th March with over 1,000 runners climbing 902 steps and 183 metres to the top of Tower 42, collectively raising over £300,000 for Shelter in the process.
Runners assemble in a lift lobby in the tower's basement before being released individually at 5 second intervals to ascend a dog-leg stairs which winds its way up to the top floor. The stairwell is artificially ventilated with warm dry air pumped in on every landing. This is intended to reduce slip hazards on the stairwell. Unfortunately it induces coughing in participants which can last for hours!
Winner Ben Hall finished in a time of 4:51, closely followed by Suzy Walsham who clocked 5:04. Robert Tobin (below) of Trim completed the course in 8:20. Chip-timing was provided by TDL.
If doing it once wasn't enough, Paul Smith repeated the feat 9 times in succession to complete the Vertical Mile.
